Texaco robbed again at Paseo Sur station

A second daytime gunpoint robbery at the Paseo Sur Texaco this year left attendant Dennis Cisneros shaken. About 4 30 am Sunday May 27 the heavyset gunman forced cash, fired a shot at Cisneros, and fled toward Century 21 Real Estate. Police estimated a 357 magnum fired hitting a brick pillar.

Thoroughfare widening project slated for SR 434 from Angel Fire to Monte Verde Lake

On site manager John Garcia of Wylie Corporation says work on the $2.7 million SR 434 widening from the blinking light to Monte Verde Lake will begin by mid May with a 90 day schedule. The project includes a turning lane and walking paths and will close one lane while businesses stay accessible. Weather permitting, completion is targeted for late October.

Taos County Detention Center opens its new inmate built recreation area with a public reception from 5 to 9 p.m. today May 31. Administrator Ambrose Mascarefias notes the project cost about 40000 after inmate labor reduced estimated 100000.

Senator Domenici Scores Zero on Environment in 1989 Vote

Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico earned a zero percent rating from the Conservation Voters Alliance for his 1989 environmental voting record. The group cited positions on national forests plutonium production offshore drilling groundwater protection and related safety and regulatory issues, placing him among seven senators with the lowest score.

Taos County votes to lay off many exempt staff to fund workers comp payment

Taos County commissioners endorsed substantial layoffs aimed at saving about 275000 dollars in mostly management salaries to cover a 500000 dollar payment to the state workers compensation fund. Savings would also reduce fringe benefits and impact long time road department staff. The vote followed criticism of local press coverage and included several ancillary actions such as ambulance payments and a temporary fund transfer.

New owners plan to revive the Kachina Lodge

Betty Ditto and partners John and Richard Farrell of Amarillo and Dean and Sally Koop of Albuquerque have taken ownership of the Kachina Lodge in Taos after a two year sale. They plan full restoration of public and private areas, repaving, a new roof, and expanded convention facilities to attract more gatherings. The group says the property is no longer for sale and urges local support to boost visitor numbers.
