Taos Rotary Club members heard Jim Colegrove discuss Taos County’s future industry. Opinions favored light manufacturing after strict zoning to protect tourist assets, with emphasis on promoting the tourist trade, ski business, and informed service.
Three officials of the Kit Carson Electric Co Op attended a two day meeting of Co Op officials held Tuesday and Wednesday at the Western Skies in Albuquerque. Manager Terry Moynihan trustee Ruben Martinez and office manager Joe Rodriguez were among about 150 officials from 41 cooperatives in New Mexico Texas and Arizona. The theme was policies and planning. Lee Chambard chairman of the New Mexico Public Service Commission welcomed the delegates. John W Scott newly appointed assistant REA administrator spoke on a uniform system of accounts adopted earlier this year. Gerald F Diddle assistant director of REA for the Southwest spoke on the need for long range planning.
Town Clerk Molly Rivera says occupation taxes are overdue with about 70 percent of merchants paying. The remainder are delinquent and names of unpaid local merchants will be released in about a week.
Ernestine Vigil was named top senior at Taos High School during Senior Class Night for the 1961 graduating class. Four $210 scholarships, funded by the Taos Municipal Schools PTA, were awarded to Vigil Beverly Weir Avery Miller and Karen Engstrom with college plans cited.
Hospital notes list admissions from May 17 to May 22 including Ruth Kiser Taos and Mary Faulhaber Red River, with several patients from Taos Vargas Ranchos de Taos and Vadito. dismissals include Juan Arellano Costilla and multiple Taos residents May 16 to May 22, plus a May 17 birth to David Polson Taos. Gov Edwin L Mechem voiced support for State Game and Fish Director Fred A Thompson. He dismissed rumors of any preferred successor and said Thompson is doing a good job.
In Albuquerque a book on Confederate Civil War victories in the southwest will be released in July by Horn and Wallace. A sequel on Union victories in the southwest is planned for release in the fall.
The Mobil Travel Guide for the South Central and Southwestern States spotlights Taos tourism highlighting its Indian Spanish personality, landscape, art scene, and landmarks such as Taos Plaza Taos Pueblo Ranchos de Taos and Kit Carson House. It rates hundreds of hotels and restaurants and compares value. The guide covers Arizona Colorado Kansas New Mexico Oklahoma Texas and more with a Michelin like objective handbook. It sells for one dollar.
The city invites all boys and girls to a lively eight week summer program from June 5 to July 28. Activities include two baseball leagues for ages 11 to 15, a softball league for younger boys, a girls softball league, two basketball leagues, weight lifting, wrestling, boxing, table tennis, dancing, cheerleading, tumbling, shuffleboard, volley ball, swimming trips, and picnics. Boys report to the field and girls to the gym. All city and county residents are welcome.
Proceeds from the double feature at Kit Carson Drive-In go to the Kiwanis Club. Ford Taylor, operator, announced the films Thirty starring Jack Webb and the Grand Old Opera. Tickets are available from Kiwanis members or at the ticket office.
Santa Fe reports nine aides will join the Health Department to support tuberculosis patients and families. After a three week training in Santa Fe, aides will be assigned to Bernalillo, Rio Arriba, Taos, Kinley, San Juan, San Miguel, Eddy counties with headquarters in Amarilla Espanola Taos Jup Farmington Las Vegas Carlsbad. Funded by a $32400 Public Health Service grant, the project aims to extend nursing tasks and provide bilingual interpretation to improve care in high TB areas, enhancing field clinics and drug therapy efforts.
Mason Huff, president of the Colorado Serum, says his company will not hire workers under fifty, claiming the policy improves work quality and order as employees “keep getting and better at their jobs.”
