Body buried again near Kit Carson grave in Taos
The disinterred remains of a man known as John Doe at Kit Carson Cemetery in Taos were reconstructed at UNM but reburied on May 15 in the grave from which he was taken. The event links to Kit Carson lore, a “long lost daughter” and the 1991 interment of Carson Squires, with Taos officials and Bent Lodge arranging the reburial and sparking anger from locals who insisted the original occupant belonged there.

Taos Plan to widen Ranchitos blocked by SHPO decision
Taos and the New Mexico State Highway Department must restart the Ranchitos Road realignment project after the State Office of Historic Preservation refused to approve the plan. The $1.3 million project would have added two 12 foot lanes with shoulders and sidewalks, but SHPO cites the Taos Downtown Historic District and requires feasible alternatives or preservation measures. Lawrence Ortega reported that SHPO favors an alignment that would take frontage on the north side and that ongoing meetings with SHPO and Gov. Bruce King sought resolution. The town must prove there is no prudent alternative before funding can proceed.

Taos man charged in $100,000 hunting fraud scheme
Carl Miller, 40, formerly of Taos County, faces racketeering and fraud charges in Eighth Judicial District Court over Diamond Hart Outfitters. Investigators say he defrauded in-state and out-of-state hunters of 1200 to 4000 dollars each, failing to provide hunts or elk permits near Chama and Moreno Valley. Bond set at 150000. he remains at large as of May 18.
