Taos marks its 350th year with a non profit board controlling minting limits for commemorative coins and a protected name. Kiwanis maps update Taos County history with new illustrations. Raton joins Taos in coin sales. Charles DeLisio orders include donations or purchases.
State Patrolman Willie Garcia reported two May 8 crashes in the Questa area. A Pasadena man Ralph C. Norrish trailer jackknifed after a rear tire blew, with no injuries. Later Gilbert E. Vargas of El Prado collided with Joe A. Mascarenas of Cerro. a passenger, Jerry Montoya, was treated for a sore shoulder and forehead lacerations. Vargas was cited for driving on the wrong side and intoxication. fined $100 plus court costs of $7.50.
More than 700 New Mexican women join the state League of Women Voters, with branches opening in Roswell and Sandoval. At the annual meeting, 45 delegates and 12 board members attended as a panel on revenue requirements and future income sources for the state highlighted the session.
The Evelyn Anglada fund grows beyond 3800 with new donations listed from Santa Cruz High School Activities Fund Arroyo Seco Schools and Taos area schools among many individuals. Key contributors include Mrs Maggie Oakley Mr Pablo Flores and Los Alamos Scientific Lab alongside local education groups and religious charities. Donation amounts noted range from a few dollars to several hundred dollars reflecting broad community support for Mrs Anglada awaiting a kidney transplant.
The New Mexico Rural Library Service bookmobile will visit Alcalde Velarde and Embudo on Tuesday May 18 with schedule blocks at Alcalde Mission School 9 to 9 45 a.m. and 9 50 to 11 a.m. at Velarde Public School 11 15 to 12 15, 12 45 to 1 p.m. at Medicine Man Trading Post, and Embudo Hospital 1 15 to 1 45 p.m.
A steering committee was chosen to guide a newly formed Community Action Program under the Economic Opportunity Act. The May meeting in Taos County drew over 30 officials as the Taos County Development Association will be revamped to align with EOA goals and local self help.
Employment Security Commission reports March total of 258,600 jobs, up 2,400 from February and 19,200 from a year earlier. Government gains led, Albuquerque adds 800 posts to 92,500, with manufacturing and mining showing mixed changes. Average weekly earnings rise in Albuquerque to 103.49, statewide figures vary by sector, and construction shows a large uptick. Local note mentions Carlsbad bats and regional industry shifts amid broader gains.
Bats Back Home communications and public utilities gained 100 to 19 600. General merchandise apparel eating and drinking places drug stores nurseries and stores rose 500 to 53 400. Speculative building added 200 to 11 500. Finance, insurance and real estate totaled 11 500. Hotels and lodging places up 100 to 45 400. Forest service and education added most of a 400 rise to 74 800. Building and heavy construction grew 100 to 8 200. Factory manufacturing up 100 to 86 600. Transportation communications and public utilities steady at 61 00. Trade up 400 to 21 030. Service and miscellaneous at 21 200, government to 21 200 with a 100 increase.

NSF grants sent for UNM eight week courses for Ralph Trujillo and Mrs. Wanda Weaver. Chamber banquet speech on weaponry by Capt. H Barr Palmer draws small crowd. Taos Jr. High needle craft and woodwork class window display runs at Ilfeld’s from May 7. Taos County School Board hires personnel for next year in special session. names not released at press time.
Miss Adelaida Sandoval, 77, died May 3 at her Llano Quemado home. A May 6 requiem Mass at St. Francis de Assissi Church, Ranchos de Taos, followed by burial in Llano Quemado Cemetery. Eulogist Meliton Struck, pallbearers Frank Roybal, Agapito Gonzales, George Pacheco, Leroy Mondragon, Tony Romero, Ray Garcia. Rosary nights May 4 and at Garcia Funeral Home. survivors include two sisters Lupita Mondragon and Epimenia Fernandez and a sister-in-law Adelida Sandoval, all of Llano Quemado.
Supt. Otero stated District 6 residents in Tres Piedras favor joining the Taos Municipal District as Rio Grande Gorge Bridge completion would provide an all weather route. He noted District 6 valuation around $8 million, Taos District at $3.5 million, District 2 at $1.2 million, District 7 at $250,000, and District 8 at $800,000.
Central Catholic High School will hold graduation ceremonies at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on May 16 at 7 30 p m. Rt Rev Msgr Joseph L Charewicz will deliver the address. The mass will be celebrated by Msgr Sigmund Charewicz with Deacon John Mcugh and Subdeacon Ralph Herrera. Master of ceremonies is Rev Thomas Hesnan. Sisters M Elaine and Mary Raphael will participate. The processional is Silver Trumpets and the recession Christus Vincit. A reception follows in the school gym with the all girl choir performing. Guard of honor will be the junior class.
The Junior Rifle Club for youths up to 18 meets Wednesdays at 7:00 PM at the armory under Carl Berghoffer and Louis Farenandez. The group, hosted by Sierra Sporting Goods, teaches gun safety shooting and sports competition and invites interested children to join.
