Taos Ski Valley to reopen for Memorial Day weekend skiing

Taos Ski Valley owner Ernie Blake says shirt-sleeve skiing will return for a three day Memorial Day weekend May 26-28 with midwinter snowpack and 130 inches on the ground. Lodges open include Sierra del Sol Kan dahar Rio Hondo Thunderbird and Hondo Lodge as activities extend into July.

May 18 Show Cause Hearing Set in Taos Police Suit

Former Taos police officers seek reinstatement after claiming their remove was unconstitutional. Hearing in Albuquerque federal court will consider if the town violated rights by suspending and dismissing 11 officers between 1972 and 1973. Exhibits include a December 8, 1972 demand for a new Police Chief.

Taos Super Market Wins Kit Carson Bowling Title

Taos Super Market captured the league title at Taos Bowling Lanes, receiving the team trophy and individual honors. They posted the high team single game 933 pins and high three game team series 3085 pins, with Tim Pacheco leading the 3 game series at 628 pins. Jose Espinosa and Floyd Garcia also earned top individual honors among rivals.

Penasco Runners Lead District Meet To State Qualifiers

Nelson Arellano won the top yard dash in 10.2 seconds and tied a district mark. Benito Arellano won the two mile in 10.22 and placed third in the mile in 4.54, narrowly missing the district record. Both qualified for state in Albuquerque. Rodarte placed fourth in javelin. Panthers lost 12-4 to St. Kate's in the district playoffs, ending the season as seniors look to the Northern Rio Grande summer program.

Misunderstanding leaves Questa in cold baseball season over

Questa High School coach Arthur Martinez says a misunderstanding cost the Wildcats a spot in the District 2-AA playoffs after Penasco beat Questa 13-11 the prior week. He cites lack of a certified umpire and a Bentleman's agreement as the reason and notes officials are drafting by laws to cover such disputes.

Questa Trackmen Qualify Three For State Meet

Questa High School sends three athletes to the state track meet in Albuquerque. Michael Cisneros threw the discus 127 feet, nearing a district record. Eddie Segura ran the low hurdles in 21.4 seconds to qualify. Horace Segura vaulted 10 ft 6 in to qualify. Non-qualifiers include Richard Leon fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 220, and Lloyd Montoya placing fourth in the 440 and both 440 and 880 relays.

The regular monthly Town Council session is set for 7 30 p m Wednesday at the town offices on Armory Street. Members will discuss agenda items and public notices during the hour long session.

Tigers Split Two in District Tourney Run

The Taos Tigers beat Santa Cruz 13-12 in the 2-AA district opener at Santa Cruz on Friday but fell 12-2 to Raton on Saturday. Top hitters were Cliff Cisneros 4 for 5, Danny Ortiz 3 for 5, and Steve Trujillo 3 for 6. The Taos track team, last in seven at Raton for the 2-AAA meet, gained experience and looks to a rebuilding season next year.

Cause of plaza fire determined at Taos gallery

Fire at the Spanish Steps Gallery on April 26 was caused by an oversized lightbulb left in a faulty untested socket. Taos Plaza north side venue closed for repairs after the blaze.
