Taos imposes burn ban amid dry conditions and fires

Mayor Fred Peralta issued a total burn ban for Taos and the three mile extraterritorial buffer. All burn permits are suspended, with fines up to 500 dollars and possible 90 day jail terms. Fire costs will be charged to violators. Nearby Questa and Santa Fe also ban burning as Arroyo Hondo's April 25 blaze scorched over 20 acres and threatened 11 homes.

Taos spotlight on Claudia Schiffer ad shoot for Liz Claiborne

Taos hosts a Fall 2000 Liz Claiborne advertising campaign shot by Alberto Gili with Claudia Schiffer. Gotham Advertising Agency crews worked on photographs set to billboards buses cable cars and kiosks in San Francisco Chicago and New York. Sept publications include Vogue Harper's Bazaar and other national magazines. Taos County film commissioner Jonathan Slater helped bring the project.

County Bond Fee Prompted In-Person Payment Demand

Bank of New York Western Trust assistant vice president Patti Cronin flew to New Mexico to collect a $3,767.75 payment owed by Taos County for a hospital bond fee. Cronin cited bank rules in refusing further comment while documents hint at potential costs to county taxpayers if the bill remained unpaid. See bond details on Page A3.

Gunfire hits Taos youth and probation centers in April shootout

Police say gunfire damaged the Juvenile Probation Office on Gusdorf Road and a Ford Expedition parked outside, Taos Cycle Works lost two display windows, and the Taos Youth and Family Center was hit at least 22 times in an early morning attack. Police Chief Neil Curran cited increased patrols near Enos Garcia and Taos Elementary Schools amid spring break unrest. Spent .22 cartridges were found at the probation office. investigators have few leads.
