Taos Boys Club grows from boxing roots to broader services

Taos is home to a growing Taos Boys Club once started as a boxing club in 1959. Roy Martinez recalls steering efforts with local leaders, Kiwanis and Boys Clubs of America resulting in incorporation in 1962 and LEAA funded growth totaling $15,000. The club now offers boxing plus weightlifting, crafts, swimming, library, counseling, and youth programs for ages five to twenty, with ongoing fundraising to secure future LEAA funding and support from community partners.

Towns library budget up for Harwood Foundation funding

Taos Town Council approved a 400 increase raising the Harwood Foundation annual budget from 600 to 1000 dollars effective after July 1 1973. If the Public Library Financial Assistance Act passes and funds are allocated the library could receive about 3500 in state aid with eligibility requiring a legally constituted library and a minimum 1000-year budget supported by the surrounding community.

Goals meetings scheduled in Taos plan

Taos plans three year program under a State Planning Office grant. Co chairs Phil Lovato and Lou Pond announce meetings on March 28 29 30 at 7 30 p m Taos Junior High with coordinators for land use utilities human and social concerns education housing. Further sessions to be announced.

Taos Day Care Center Affirms Inclusive Admissions

The Coronado Neighborhood Facility Taos Day Care Center states it admits children regardless of race color creed or ethnic background in line with its policies and government rules. The center currently has openings for children.

Charges Dropped Against Ex Policeman in Montana Case

Municipal Magistrate Joe C Montoya dismissed all assault by threat charges against former Taos police officer Joe Montana after complainant Michael Martinez failed to produce witnesses. Martinez said they would testify but did not appear, while Montoya noted the complainant’s word is not reliable. The trial had been postponed from March 12 due to Martinez’s absence.

Public Forum Letter Praises Chief Rivera by District Attorney

A letter given to the Taos News from Taos Mayor Phillip Cantu Jr and Taos County officials commends Chief Rivera. Assistant District Attorney Chester H. Walter Jr of Santa Fe lauds the Chief for outstanding police work and the successful conclusion of a lengthy jury trial.

Quintana sixth graders win Taos Elementary tourney crown

Leo Quintana's Bucks routed Gonzales Mustangs 26 1 to seize the sixth grade A division title in the 1973 Taos Elementary School Basketball Tournament. Anthony Medina led with 15 points as Gutierrez, Salazar and Martinez homerooms claimed various trophies and all-tourney selections were named across grades.

Rural school meet on minority isolation issues

Roy Martinez of Taos schools announced a 2 p.m. meeting Friday March 23 at the administration building to discuss planning an Emergency School Aid Act project. The district will target Arroyo Hondo Arroyo Seco Ranchos and Talpa with minority isolation programs inviting all to attend.
