Soldier Laid to Rest in Taos After Vietnam Death
SP-4 Manuel A. Torrez an 18 year old Taos native was killed in Vietnam on February 26 while serving with the 25th Infantry Division. He was buried with full military honors March 9 at Talpa Cemetery after a funeral mass at St. Francis de Assis Church Ranchos de Taos. Torrez joined the Army in May 1965, served as a Scout patrol point man, and was killed by a fragment from a Claymore mine. He is survived by his parents brother and sisters. Pallbearers and Sandia Base color guard participated in the services. Funeral arrangements were handled by Garcia Funeral Home with prayers held in Taos prior to burial.

Foreign Students To Visit In Taos Area
A group of 28 foreign students from India Formosa Germany Nicaragua Thailand Norway Korea Japan Philippines Pakistan England Iraq Jordan Lebanon Ecuador Austria and others will visit Taos Saturday to Monday under Rotary International sponsorship. Ruth G Price from the University staff accompanies them. The Taos Chamber Women’s Division helps with housing tours and hosting. Gov Severino Martinez of Taos Pueblo will answer questions and Paul J Bernal serves as interpreter. Students will stay with Taos residents to gain insight into American life and a series of events is planned.

Jail Scuffle Breaks Out in Taos Courthouse
A jail inmate fighting with Undersheriff Uvaldo Santoval, Taos Chief Arthur Leach, and two Garcia ambulance attendants sparked a five minute scuffle at the county courthouse last Thursday. The man had fallen ill in custody and was placed on a stretcher before the incident. He was returned to jail as the ambulance left.

Welfare Director Named Taos County post
Mary Alexander, mental health consultant for New Mexico Department of Public Health Division of Mental Health, will become Taos County welfare director on March 20 replacing Lois Oakley who has served as acting director for 19 months. Alexander previously worked as Taos child welfare worker 1962 to 1965 and earned a Columbia University master of social work.
