Moratorium on Public Lands Applications Explained

The 18 month moratorium on most non-mineral public land applications through the Bureau of Land Management runs Feb 17 to Sept 1, 1962. It excludes mining and mineral leasing filings, state and local government actions, and Alaska scrip and settlement claims. Udall says the pause allows review, reduces backlogs, and guides long term policy while protecting national and local interests. Over 60,000 pending non-mineral applications will be examined on their merits, with major policy revisions and a large inventory program planned for transfers to states, locals, individuals, and firms.
