Lovato wins Taos mayoral race and third term

Taos Mayor Phil Lovato narrowly captured a third term Tuesday with 892 votes to 330 for John Himes. Santistevan led council with 546, Elley Jeantete won 470 and 61.6 percent turnout in the mayoral vote. Incumbent judge Joe Montoya was re‑elected with 414 votes.

Rescue climber hoisted from Rio Grande Gorge by cable

Man Rescued After Six-Hour Dangling Ordeal at Gorge Bridge

A new Taos resident, Juan Martinez, 21, spent six terrifying hours dangling 200 feet above the Rio Grande Gorge after slipping while hiking from a west side campground. Dozens of rescuers used a litter, a lifeguard helicopter, and a gas-powered winch to haul him to safety near the bridge linking U.S. 64. Martinez, found alert and grateful, was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital in good condition after the rescue.
