Fred Peralta captured the Taos mayor seat with 449 votes as 1,007 voters turned out in a municipal race marked by heavy participation and a competitive field. Jose L. Silva received 307 and Andres S. Vargas 240, with Peralta promising progressive governance and youth opportunities.
The Taos city race ends with Duran leading the field in the corner seat with 507 votes. Cruz collects 484, narrowly ahead of four challengers in absentee counting while Duran vows full effort for four years. Other candidates include Gonzales 341 Himes 225 Albrecht 108 Maestas 90 Pearlman 73.
Bobby Ortega defeated incumbent Lawrence Gallegos by 441 to 159 with Horace Gonzales at 31. Malaquias V. Rael and Floyd Garcia Jr. join the village council as Ortega prepares a four year agenda focused on positive change, speaking at the Questa VFW Hall after the election results.
Red River voters turnout 82 percent of 244 registered to reelect Mayor John Tillery to a four-year term. In Angel Fire, Louise B. Jones and Greg Lisk won the two village council seats amid a high turnout.
A 20 year old Taos Pueblo man fell 125 feet into the Rio Pueblo Gorge near Taos while drinking with friends. He died six hours later after rescue attempts. Witnesses described him tumbling from the rim in cold 30s weather near State Road 570.
