A Taos County man died from Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, the state reports confirming the first NM hantavirus fatality of the year and the second case in 2006. A autopsy confirmed the virus, with environmental tests to trace exposure. Officials urge cleaning and sealing buildings to prevent deer mouse exposure as warmer weather increases rodent activity.
Ash Wednesday begins Lent for Catholics Episcopalians Lutherans and Presbyterians with ashes blessed and applied by the priest at Mass. The 40 day observance recalls Jesus fasting in the desert and includes fasting abstinence and acts of mercy leading to Easter. Lent spans 40 weekdays five Sundays and culminates in Holy Week and Resurrection with violet liturgical color.
An Austin based coalitions led by FaulknerUSA and including The Durrant Group and NCA Architects outlined plans to build the Taos Justice Center. Elmer Garcian joined county officials for an initial briefing at the site with Manny Pacheco and Nick Jara millo in attendance. Louis Macrano of Faulkner USA requested a follow up meeting for Agnes Cardenas Oakeley on February 6.
President George W Bush proposes FY 2007 budget funding that would sell nearly one billion dollars of public lands to boost federal receipts. Proceeds would support states and counties hurt by reduced timber harvests on federal land and extend the Secure Rural Schools act for five more years. Taos County lands are not yet slated for sale.
