Fire closes First State Bank in brief
An electrical fire erupted in vice president Isacc Gonzales' office at First State Bank on Monday February 27 forcing 15 employees to evacuate. The building filled with acrid smoke and electricity was out until 3 50 p m. A skeleton crew remained after the smoke cleared to air out the bank. Electrician Frank DelMargo spotted sparking wires while trying to abate the issue caused by old wiring. Dennis Garcia used a dry chemical extinguisher to prevent further spread.

Walker receives six year sentence in cocaine case
Ron Walker, 49, is sentenced by U S District Judge Santiago Campos to 72 months in prison and five years supervised release for possession of less than 500 grams of cocaine with intent to distribute. His wife Janetta, 35, had charges dismissed. George Harney faces state charges after 14 grams of cocaine were found in his vehicle during the Eagle Nest raid. A separate seven pounds of cocaine found in a vacuum cleaner at another Walker home prompts additional state charges.

Clayton fined for DWI and property damage in New Mexico
William L. Clayton of San Cristobal pleaded guilty to DWI and driving off the roadway after his 1987 white Volkswagen left SR 64, tore through a fence and Taco Bell sign in El Prado. He was fined 350 dollars plus 61 dollars in costs and ordered to attend DWI school. The incident damaged about 200 dollars in a field fence and a Taco Bell sign.

Speegle Joins Carson Dickie as New District Staffer

Bernardo Tafoya 103 Dies at Amalia Home
Bernardo Tafoya age 103 died Thursday February 23 at his home in Amalia. Born May 28 1885 in Llano de San Juan near Pefiasco he was among the county’s oldest residents. He was the son of Porfirio Esquibel and Marcello Tafoya. He and his wife Mequilita who died in 1935 had 16 children and he leaves 37 grandchildren 70 great grandchildren and 16 great great grandchildren.

A long lived Amalia resident who made railroad ties by hand with a pull ax until 1945 spent his retirement on the family ranch. He enjoyed visiting the post office and Amalia Senior Citizens Center, celebrated a centenarian birthday, and loved cigars, chewing tobacco, and brandy. Grandchildren Dolores Lucero and Donelia Ortega remember him as one who “took good care of us.”
