Taos Imposes One Percent Sales Tax Within Town
The Taos town tax goes into effect this Saturday with a one percent sales tax. Businessmen inside the town and county will remit to the Bureau of Revenue by the 20th each month, the first due Aug 20. Outside corporate limits, county residents pay half a percent. The tax is collected from purchasers of goods and services and funds construction of the new Placitas Road court house, with architect choice still undecided.

The executive committee approved funding for the county Head Start program with shortages in pay known for Pe nasco and Questa staff last year. Forest Fires Cost Taos County Over $125000 This Year
Carson National Forest fires since March have cost Taos County and the United States more than 125000, not counting timber losses. An additional 9000 will be spent this week on rehabilitating burned areas. Thirty nine fires have occurred, 17 man caused and 22 by lightning, with four reported last week burning 11 acres and over 1100 acres of timber destroyed.

New Opportunities Open Up For Mexican Americans

Mrs Wathen 70 Dies After Taos Visit
Mrs Mary B Wathen of Wisner Nebraska aged 70 died on Thursday May 25 after being stricken and hospitalized in Taos New Mexico. She is survived by two sisters Mrs John Angle of Santa Ana California and Mrs Benjamin Griffith of Wisner. The remains were flown May 30 by Trans World Airlines to Wisner for funeral services. Interment was at Fremont Nebraska. The Garcia Funeral Home handled local arrangements.
