Taos schools told to cut budget by 1 million

Taos Municipal School District must cut a million from the proposed budget after the state ordered reductions. Superintendent Rod Weston said the cuts threaten core programs and services as the district battles compliance issues in special education. Weston outlined options including halting visiting artists and easing credit requirements. eliminating 20 teaching positions is not feasible due to teacher shortages. The state rejected the district’s budget due to only 163000 in reserves and ongoing compliance fixes. Weston’s contract non-renewal is tied to broader compliance and nutrition program losses estimated around 600000, with previous reserve levels around 500000.

Taos Town seeks long term lease of Old Courthouse from county

Taos Town Manager Rick Bellis urged Taos County commissioners at their June 24 meeting to consider a long term lease for the Plaza building. He cited funding sources to fund ADA upgrades and accessibility, including elevators and accessible bathrooms, to revitalize the courthouse now housing the Chamber of Commerce and Taos Entrepreneurial Network. Local architect David Henry warned the roof is severely deteriorated and the structure fails current codes, though the historic designation allows continued operation without full ADA compliance for now.
