Taos plans a new salary schedule with freezes for top steps while keeping all salaries intact. The 1987 88 budget totals 6.4 million with a 2.7 million cash balance and projected revenues of 5.57 million. The town faces slower gross receipts growth and reduced federal funds after Molycorp closure.
Former governor aide John Ramming filed a motion with the New Mexico Supreme Court on Tuesday to recall a mandate that could see him jailed within two weeks. He may appeal to the state Court of Appeals and then the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing he did not receive a fair trial and that his case was not properly separated from co-defendant Pete Mondragon. Ramming, living in Des Monnes, was convicted in 1986 for conspiracy, fraud, racketeering and kickbacks in a $2.8 million flood relief scandal, and the state Supreme Court recently refused to review that conviction.
Eight thousand Kansas chickens arrived in Taos to start the first floor system egg farm in 20 years. Nest Egg Farms, a half million dollar venture by Lanny and Anne Bruder, will house white Leghorns and later brown Leghorns for brown eggs. The aim is humane free-range laying, with natural eggs sold to health stores and restaurants statewide and retail locally. Bruder notes strong local appeal and limited NM competition, dependent on external markets.
Taos County Economic Development Corp plans a July in-depth business survey to map existing firms and unmet needs. Aims include a liberal arts college with an art institute, Main Street improvements, and marketing Taos products with countywide interviews and fundraising efforts. Local officials seek donations and volunteer help.
The high reached 87 degrees on Monday June 22 with a low of 43 from Thursday through Monday June 18 to 22. The National Weather Service calls for mostly sunny days, fair nights, and a chance of isolated afternoon and evening thundershowers with highs in the 80s and lows in the 40s.

Bill Blair reports Taos Municipal School Board unanimously hires Andy Gallegos to lead athletics with a focus on well rounded students, better schedules, new tournaments, and community input. Gallegos pledges grade checks for players, review of staff, and improved gate receipts while planning a Christmas basketball tournament and honoring his Questa and Taos roots.
Ricardo Medina of San Cristobal found six of nine sheep killed in a pasture by neighbor’s dogs, including two newborn lambs. Two ewes had necks broken and dragged to a pond. three animals survived but were bitten. Damages total 700 dollars. Medina shot the dogs and sheriff deputy Miera investigated. Previous incidents with the same neighbor occurred in 1986 with compensation later.
A San Cristobal woman reported a rape on June 17 at her home with no arrest yet. Police have a suspect as deputies Dan Herrera and Michael Romero investigate for the district attorney's office. A separate Alcalde girl was brought to Holy Cross Hospital the same night, treated and released, with the case referred to Espanola police.
