Town approves drought water use ordinance in Taos
The Taos Town Council approved an ordinance creating five water conservation stages to trigger progressively stricter limits. Phase 1 bans daytime outdoor watering, urges two hour max per area, and bans sprinklers in wind or rain. Phase 2 allows two watering days per week. Phase 3 limits washing vehicles to one day per week. Phase 4 bans sprinkler outdoor watering and tightens leaks. Phase 5 marks extreme conditions with severe restrictions and possible penalties. Officials say the rules are precautionary and enforceable by officers with up to $500 daily fines and 90 days in jail.
