County could be broke by August

The state auditor’s initial review warns Taos County faces red ink by August with a possible $92,000 deficit and worse cash shortfalls in September. County officials push deeper cuts, reduce hours for the county manager, and lay off five tax assessor staff as the new fiscal year looms, while auditor Salazar’s final report is due in two to three weeks.

Taos graduates era drug court program first class

Three Taos County residents completed the Adult Drug Court program on May 22 in the Eighth Judicial District Court marking a new start for one man and two women. Taos Mayor Fred Peralta said the graduates’ progress offers community hope and a healthier future through collective effort.

Drunken driver jailed four years in Taos County

District Judge Peggy Nelson on Tuesday sentenced Daryl Hicks to four years for causing great bodily harm in an alcohol related collision in March 1998. Sullivan, 37, endured a long recovery with facial reconstruction and a hip repair after Hicks fled to Denver before extradition. The jury convicted Hicks March 23 of drunken driving and other charges, with prosecutors seeking an extended sentence citing aggravating factors.

Judge orders Taos County probe and grand jury

District Judge Peggy Nelson ordered a sweeping Taos County government investigation and convened a grand jury on May 30. The consolidated case targets alleged mismanagement in services, open meetings and records acts, land use enforcement, personnel policy violations, procurement, and related acts among officials and county staff. Attorney General Patricia Madrid was ordered to assist the grand jury but has sought removal.

Forest closure met with mixed compliance near Taos

Carson National Forest and other Southwest forests closed May 20 ahead of Memorial Day weekend to protect the area. Law enforcement led by Anthony Trujillo and Phil Tafoya reported mostly cooperative visitors, with a few ignoring signs. An illegal campfire in La Jara Canyon sparked a 36 acre fire near El Rito, quickly contained by Cornelio Lopez and responders.
