Oilmen plan three test wells in Pot Creek area near Taos
Leonard Minerals Co. plans to drill three test oil and gas wells in the Pot Creek area near Taos starting September. The project covers about 180000 acres in Carson National Forest with leases paying $1 per year per acre. If gas or oil is found, production could create many jobs though immediate economic benefit is uncertain. Environmental review by Forest Service and BLM will assess wildlife, erosion, water and road impacts and mitigation steps. First three wells must be drilled by Jan 1, 1991, with potential refinery transport or pipeline needs if gas is discovered.

A Cessna 140 piloted by 60 year old Jacobs and carrying his wife, 48, ran off a Taos runway on July 9 near Taos Municipal Airport. The craft failed to gain altitude and slid into sagebrush. Both survived with minor injuries after escaping the wreck. Wally Funk from the FAA led a preliminary probe.

Deer Mesa Sues County Over Taos County Panel Decision
Deer Mesa filed suit seeking to overturn a Taos County Commission decision granting conditional approval for a 24 lot subdivision near Valdez on June 23. The suit argues no cloud of title exists and that land titles are established in two quiet title suits. The Upper Arroyo Hon do Land Grant Association has notified intent to sue the county clerk, contending ownership of the land and hundreds of acres. The Deer Mesa action calls the commission move illegal arbitrary capricious and unconstitutional and seeks enforcement of the 1983 county plot approval.

Cycle wreck kills Taos man Cortez in motorcycle crash
Cortez Gabriel Leroy Cortez, 26, died Saturday after a motorcycle collided with a car at Paseo Sur and Cruz Alta near the bus station. He was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital about three hours later. Driver Richard Romero, 29, of Taos, was turning left onto Cruz Alta when the crash occurred. Police say Cortez was traveling around 60 mph, with no skid marks found.
