Gonzales Named Airport Manager In Taos Six Month Review

Richard Gonzales was hired by the Taos Town Council for a six month term as manager of Taos Municipal Airport at a salary of $500 monthly. He is owner of a local car rental and taxi service and had served as temporary manager after Ernest Lyckman’s resignation. The council, voting 3-0, will study airport finances and decide after six months whether to continue the manager or lease operations. The motion was led by Martin Vargas and supported by Ernest Santistevan with Lawrence Santistevan voting yes. Also noted, the New Mexico Traffic Safety Commission reported 16 alcohol related traffic deaths in May.

Legal Services limits aid after Supreme Court rulings

New Mexico Rural Legal Services Inc cites two Supreme Court decisions to announce it will stop accepting misdemeanor cases for all indigent defendants. The rulings say imprisonment without counsel is unconstitutional in some cases and that punishing nonpayment of fines without alternative payment plans is unlawful. The group urges using installment options and other methods to help the poor meet fines.

State reviews dump site as fires persist near Taos airport

An environmental official said the state is reviewing the operation of the new town dump near Taos Municipal Airport due to several burning incidents. Joe Harris of the Environmental Improvement Agency noted the review aims to address open burning and cover daily trash to prevent fires. A state suit over open burning at the former dumpsite remains pending, likely influenced by the new site's operation.

Anita Valdes rites held for Taos woman

Anita Valdez, 80, lifelong Taos resident, died July 16 1972. Born December 4 1891, she is survived by sister Ophelia Valdez and brother Felix Valdez, both of Taos. Burial followed services at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and Sierra Vista Cemetery. Pallbearers included Gilbert Romero Ted Mondragon Ben M Sandoval Fernando Valdez Ray Valdez and Richard Valdez. Rosary services were held July 17 and 14 at Hanlon's Evergreen Chapel.

Farmers Market opens Friday at County Courthouse

The Farmers Market at the courthouse lawn runs Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with local growers selling home grown produce from trucks under cottonwoods. Permits are free at the market per Alyce Frank of the Friends of Taos Valley, and all profits go to the growers.
