Duran and Valdez stood on the council platform after unofficial returns showed Duran with 279 votes to Valdez 200. The town clerk estimated about 1,800 registered voters and a turnout near 33 percent, with Duran carrying the precincts where he won 74 to 22.
A Taos election day let residents drink within town limits prior to voting though many liquor outlets did not know of the no alcohol sales rule. Major stores were informed, but several restaurants with beer licenses were unaware. State AB C enforcement officer Jake Martinez stressed license holders must know and follow the law.

The National Weather Service reports a high of 79 degrees in Taos last Thursday July 17 and a low of 60 that day and Saturday July 19. Forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with scattered thundershowers and weekend temperatures below normal. Expect daytime highs in the 70s to 80s and nighttime lows from the 40s to 80s.
Taos County plans a site review as Taos Town Council endorses Molycorp's Guadalupe Mountains tailings proposal and urges approval. Questa Village Council and Taos Chamber of Commerce also backed the plan, citing mining operation continuity and future assistance.
Taos Pueblo’s Tribal Council authorized a five member Golf Course Development Committee to study an 18 hole course with a club house and driving range on Pueblo land beside the Rio Grande Gorge. If started next summer it could be playable by 1988. Water rights and possible related facilities like a hotel and restaurant are being explored.
State officials report a gasoline leak near the Four Flags Exxon station has contaminated the water table but not drinking wells. Exxon drilled test wells, finding benzene levels high in one, while town wells remain uncontaminated. Monitoring continues as officials assess migration and duration.
Heavy rainfall from January through July boosts hay rotting and grasshopper numbers while shielding some trees with budworm recovery. On July 19 two inches fell in parts of Taos threatening roads and homes. Local weather stations report above normal moisture, with ongoing impact on agriculture.
