Clothing Drive For Penasco Family Loss From Fire
The American Red Cross seeks clothing and household articles for the Jimmy Romero family of Penasco whose home furnishings were destroyed in a May fire. The family includes three girls aged four seven and 10 and a five year old boy. A seven year old girl remains under treatment at Bernalillo County Indian Hospital. Taos County residents may donate via the Public Welfare office.

Taos Animal Shelter to Get New Manager John Manuel Fernandez
Taos Animal Shelter will be operated by John Manuel Fernandez of Santa Fe starting Saturday, Aug. 1, replacing Dr. Grauman Wiksten who has led the shelter for three years. Fernandez, not a veterinarian, trained in shelter care by Emery Gerzanich of the Santa Fe shelter, will oversee daily operations. Two Mauro Veterinary Hospital doctors from Espanola will visit Taos twice weekly, with schedules to be announced.

Governor Sandoval praised a $30,000 irrigation accord recognizing Taos Pueblo historic rights and local uses by Arroyo Seco and Des Montes. He cited Severino Martinez and the 1934 Tenorio Tract ruling granting 18 percent to Arroyo Seco and Dos Montes and 11.8 percent to Pueblo users. The Tenorio ditch dates to 1700 with the present headgate built in 1950 by the BIA.

Town budget climbs for 1964 65 in Tadse Town
Tadse Town approved a 1964 65 budget totaling 183 517 for city operations an increase of 2 340 from the 1963 64 level. The current assessed valuation is 2 287 910 up 44 851 from last year with property tax revenue at 4 438 up 26 from before. Gasoline tax leads revenue gains at 17 464 while parking meter income fell 463 from 48 090. Total revenue from all sources is 67 624 89 up 12 970 57 from last year. Officials at the meeting included Mayor Jesse Vigil City Clerk Molly Rivera and council members Palemon Martinez Sam V Martinez Ernest Martinez manager of water and sewer Luis Fernandez of the NM Department of Finance and Administration.

Fishing fine after trespass at Red River Hatchery
A Questa resident pled guilty to fishing in a restricted pond at the Red River Hatchery Sunday night after a prior warning. Ben R. Shepardson was fined 100 plus 7.50 court costs by Justice of Peace C. F. Boyer. Hatchery foreman Artie Grant and employee Allen Vick reported the incident.

Taos Fiesta Queen Contest Showcases Taos Girls
A July 18 beauty pageant at UNM Harwood Auditorium highlighted twelve Taos girls who demonstrated beauty, talent, and poise. Finalists included Sylvia Struck, Frances Mares, Anna Marie Espinosa, Evelyn Romero, Arabella Wheaton, and others with sponsors from local businesses. Judges praised dress, talent pieces, and cultural heritage, while topless bathing suit comments drew unanimous disapproval. The event crowned the Fiesta Queen in a later ceremony on July 23 at Taos Plaza.
