Rain Landslides Close State Road 38 Near Red River
Two major landslides from a heavy Sunday downpour closed State Road 38 near Red River for over two hours. One slide blocked near Red River three quarters of a mile east. another near the June Buy camp west of Red River. State Police noted more than an inch of rain in a short span. Questa and Eagle Nest Highway crews, aided by Moly Corp earth movers, cleared one lane in about an hour and the other in about two hours. Sergeant Simon Douchinoff said the equipment sped the operation.

Rodarte native Constructionman Apprentice Frolix H. Maestas USN and Navy Mobile Construction Battalion Six were commended for building a 314 foot docking pier in Da Nang Vietnam in a record 31 days. The facility marked a major breakthrough in South Vietnam ship operations. The battalion CO cited each man with a Well Done on behalf of the Navy Department.

Demos Endorse Viet Nam Policies at Taos Platform
Democratic delegates at the state platform convention in Albuquerque backed Senate Bill 3085 to restore the Blue Lake area to Taos Pueblo Indians and endorsed President Johnson's Vietnam policies after speeches by major party figures. A separate roll call defeated a public loan rate display proposal 973 to 938. Taos County favored it 32 to 8, and a death penalty replacement measure was also defeated.

CAP transfers funds to pay Questa personnel amid pay concerns
CAP officials admitted transferring about 4000 from Medicare and development funds to cover salaries for Questa program workers after pay delays. Rivera said funds were not authorized for the Penasco program, which is run by the Penasco school board. Washington disbursed 80 percent of the request with 20 percent to be released in August.

Taos County officials announce a federally sponsored credit union charter with ten incorporators including Pat Trujillo CAP assistant and Ralph Rivera. A meeting to elect nine directors five credit committee members and three supervisory committee members will be held at Taos County Courthouse July 29 at 7 p.m. Residents within 15 miles of Taos may join.
