Talks Planned to Save Taos County Roads From Pueblo Split

Taos Pueblo, Taos County officials and New Mexico's congressional delegation met Tuesday to negotiate El Salto Road and six other local routes amid a U.S. District Court order that could hand the roads to the Pueblo in 60 days. Negotiators met behind closed doors to avoid public discussion, with a Sept. 20 session planned and Interior Secretary Manuel Lujan possible at that meeting. The dispute stems from a 1934 government lands suit. the Pueblo seeks rights‑of‑way on most roads, excluding the Rio Lucero segment, which would be closed at SR 522. Over 50 attendees heard county district attorney Sammy Pacheco call it a historic moment for cooperation.
