A Taos bypass recommendation may be sent to the Town Council and County Commission within two weeks. Environmental officials note the route has environmental impacts. The Town backs Ranchitos alignment while the County seeks a comprehensive land development study before redefining its stance.
Taos residents are invited to a July 17 meeting at 5 15 p m at Coronado Center to discuss Taos Towns 1986 Main Street Program application. Robert Beauvais state director will outline the program and answer questions. For information call Menice B Santistevan grants administrator at 758 4282.
Dr. Michael Kaufman said groundbreaking could occur as early as next week for the Taos Professional Office Building to be built beside the proposed new hospital. The hospital board is expected to sign over land on Wednesday, July 16, with the doctors having paid for it while title remains with the vessel board. The land, south of the Raton Bypass, originally belonged to Melvin Weimer. Brim, Holy Cross's new management firm, will not require changes in the plan. The doctors have not chosen a contractor, weighing one local and two out-of-town firms.
Acequia Madre, the statewide acequia association, will meet Saturday July 19 at 10 30 a.m. at El Gato Creek Lodge 16 miles east of Contilla on SR 106. Agenda includes funding updates from Congress and state, bylaws and articles ratification, water rights adjudication update, and a report from the New Mexico Economic Development Department.
City meeting on July 12 heard support from tourism and government leaders but concern from residents over environmental impact and possible loss of local jobs. Richardson and Mineta outlined that funds for the Taos runway extension are in the House budget, with costs around 8 million dollars and land purchase needed for 350 to 360 acres.
District Judge Joe Caldwell removed himself from the Ski Valley Junction case prompting referral to Leon Karelitz as an Albuquerque liquor license shine and district officials await action. The attorney general seeks threefold damages totaling 8.8 million under RICO. Howard Herbert and John Petty deny fault, say they acted with record checks and title insurance before purchasing. The AG targets Richard Rowand and co-defendants in a flood relief fraud case and a transfer of the club license to Rowand via a straw man. The nightclub remains open with a posted liquor license notice through July 20 before county commission review on August 11.
The second annual powwow drew thousands of spectators last week in Taos. The article notes a warm high of 90 degrees and a cool low, with the National Weather Service predicting partly cloudy skies and scattered thundershowers. Photos and a full story are on Page 41.
Thomas E. Leyba, 41, of Embudo, was shot and died after being found outside the El Quinto Sol bar. Percy E. Gonzales, 89, of Dixon, surrendered the pistol and was jailed in Rio Arriba County. Officer Keith Elder reported the scene and Leyba died at Espanola Valley Hospital. Gonzales remained in custody days later.
