A U S Department of Agriculture official visited Taos and nearby areas reviewing Woodland Cooperative Ve lardo Appleshed Cooperative Duke City Lumber Co. sawmill and Rio Grande allotments. The tour included FHA loans and meetings with local extension agents and ranchers before flying to Santa Fe and then Washington, D.C.
Local clubs and organizations list meetings in Taos from July 17 to 19. Includes Chamber of Commerce Kiwanis Rotary St Francis Mission Cub Scouts Boys Club and LULAC plus a Pacific Repertory Company Cyrano de Bergerac show at TAA Theater with low admission and Santa Fe Opera Theater concert evening in Santa Fe.
Fiesta events run Friday and Saturday with street dancing, parades, and a traditional Baile de los Conquistadores at Kachina Lodge. Budget highlights include a $5,422 health department allocation and a reduced police budget to $35,000 amid state purchasing changes.
David A. Heerwagen and his family moved to Taos on June 26 from Pullman Washington. Heerwagen takes over as personnel management specialist at Carson National Forest with a B.S. in social science from Colorado State University and two years of graduate sociology study at Washington State University.
Larry Casados spent the Fourth of July with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Paul Casados and other family members at Santa Fe.
The county approves a General Fund budget of 38,880, up 200 from last year, with salary funds up over 4,000 due to state law to raises for clerk, treasurer, assessor, and deputies. Telephone, assessor, and development program costs rise, while office equipment and indigent burial cuts occur. New items include budgets for special and primary elections and storage rents for voting machines. Commission chairman Luis Martinez notes storage costs will require moving machines to another site.
The Taos County commissioners chose the Placitas Road site after soil surveys showed foundation issues at a Placitas location. The site was selected as the least expensive, with a unanimous vote. They will negotiate with architects, interview courthouse users, and coordinate with state and county agencies on office needs. Land owner Chet Mitchell has promised four acres for $20,000. Other sites offered at $1,000 per acre. A bake sale by the Forest Service Wives Club supports the Taos County Association for Retarded Children, starting July 15 in front of Safeway.
