Taos High School will restore a standard six class day after dropping the eight class per semester block schedule. About 50 students identified as at risk will have access to an after school session from 3 30 to 6 30 p m offering core subjects in math science English and history.
Taos County jurors found Jose Abran Trujillo guilty on multiple drug charges after a December 1997 raid where he allegedly fired a pistol at Lt. Marco Lucero. The verdict could yield about 35 years in prison. Lucero testified, describing his near fatal encounter and his relief that law enforcement is recognized as human.
Gov. Gary Johnson campaigned for statewide school vouchers in Taos, arguing a $3,500 voucher per child would spark reform and competition. He spoke at a luncheon hosted by local groups and defended vouchers against critics while pledging to press the issue with the 2000 Legislature.
Samuel Montoya, long-time Taos County manager, was confirmed by Santa Fe County commissioners and takes over a $90 million budget. He will oversee more than a dozen departments at a salary of 77,250 dollars, saying the county is progressive and aiming to acclimate quickly. He plans to return to Taos someday.
The Taos bridge killing case against Luis Acosta faces no ruling yet on changing venue due to pretrial publicity. Judge Peggy Nelson plans to seat an impartial Taos County jury first, with defense motions seeking sequestered jurors or death-penalty dismissal under consideration. Co-defendant David Sandoval pleaded guilty and received life plus 75 years, in a plea deal that includes testimony against Acosta.
