Mayor Jesse Vigil proclaims July 17 to 23 as Cancer Crusade Week urging Taos citizens to join in the fight against cancer. The announcement, issued in Taos New Mexico, calls for community support and fundraising to aid medical centers and families dealing with cancer.
The Taos County consolidation proposal faced resistance from Ranchos residents who complained they were not heard. After exchanges and interruptions, a move to accept the Taos plan failed for lack of a second, then a Ranchos stand still. Barbara Sena urged adoption, Tito Martinez abstained and requested postponement for both sides to consult.
The Rev. David Matkins of Taos announced the first services at the Questa Methodist Church will be Sunday at a set hour with Sunday School time to be announced. Matkins will also serve Questa, inviting all interested to attend worship. The church’s formal service will be Sunday, Aug. 1, and Taos services will continue.
J T Dominguez of Champsal nas elected president of the Senior Citizens of Taos County for the group third annual picnic. Next year officers include Mrs Felipe Ortega vice president and Mrs Florinda Viv secretary treasurer. About A persons attended the meeting and picnic starting at 10 am in Kit Carson Park. The group was organized three years ago by Felipe Ortega Salema Jacobo Martinez Penasce and J M Bernal of Tans and Ranchos de Taos.
Jesse Wilson of Santa Fe slipped and broke his left ankle while fishing near the State Mish Hatchery last Saturday. Taos Volunteer Fire Department used its new rescue truck on a four hour operation linking river hike, river crossing by raft, and heavy brush work to transport Wilson to Holy Cross Hospital Taos. Fire Chief Gordon Burt Assistant Chief Jim Dryden and Fireman Rodger Benner led the response with local fishermen and campers aiding in the rescue effort.
Sam Armija, a Tres Piedras Democratic committeeman and self styled chamber of commerce, was fined 825 plus costs after Justice of the Peace Firemon Sanchez found him guilty of a petty misdemeanor on September 22, 1964. Robby Carey, owner of the Three Rocks Bar, had charged Armije with entering her bar and using insulting language that impugned her honor and reputation.
Dowling and Dr Reed Benson with Donald Benson and Barton Bond attended the annual Masonic barbecue and outdoor communication at Farmington on June 26. They returned via Shiprock and Mesa Verde. Arthur Woolyckman, FF Harvey Bond, and others joined the same event and later attended the second Masonic district workshop at Valley Lodge No 649 AL A.M. Grand Master Pred W Blocksom of Roswell was the honored guest at both events.
