Nine young women aged 17 to 21 compete for Taos Fiesta Queen. They prepare outfits, rehearsals and a speech on What Taos Fiestas Mean To The, with results July 20 at the Taos Community Auditorium. Judge panel is to be outsiders, and winners receive college scholarships from the Jaycees. Coronation Ball July 21 and Queen's Ball July 22 at the Jaycees Lodge.

Taos Judge dismisses charges in El Portal bar incident
Judge Joe Montoya dismissed assault and battery and destruction of city property charges against Horacio Trujillo and Orlando Quintana after a June 29 hearing. He ruled improper police procedures were followed and that El Portal owners should have filed charges. Witnesses testified Trujillo Quintana and others were loud and intoxicated. Quintana alleged macing of witness Stutsman and an officer denied further action.

Police say camera gear including a camera, zoom lens, light pack, case and calculator vanished from a TAOS area art department after a door was left unlocked. Thieves breached a room, took 317 dollars worth of gear including two flashes and light meters on June 27. Ownership attributed to Texas Tech.

Search underway for missing boaters in New Mexico gorge
A boater who spent hours along the riverbank could not find his companions after dark and alerted police in Questa. State police and Taos Search and Rescue led a multiorganization hunt, with divers and a helicopter joining the effort. The Rio Grande gorge is extremely rough with 11,000 cfs and 190 feet per mile descent. The raft was found ashore near Bear Crossing Campground as crews pressed to recover one body and locate two others.
