Holiday closings for Fourth of July observance

The Fourth of July falls on Thursday this year and all town, county, state and federal offices, including the post office and banks, will be closed. Offices reopen Friday, July 5. The Taos News will close Thursday and reopen Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

New Mexico attorneys fined for late campaign filings

Two Eighth Judicial District candidates face penalties from the Secretary of State for late campaign finance reports. Democrat John Paternoster and Green Party’s Andres Vargas are among several statewide nominees whose penalties must be settled before ballots are printed. Charges include $100 for May 13 and $700 for May 31 delays in Paternoster’s filings, with Vargas fined $0 for the May 13 late report.

Taos voters weigh 3.2 mill Mitchell property tax plan

Mayor Fred Peralta framed the July 23 vote on a 3.2 mill tax to buy and preserve the 27 acre Mitchell property as open space. The measure seeks 1.35 million over five years with donations possible to help reduce debt, while addressing eligibility and impact concerns for residents and non residents.

Taos Tree to D.C. Dies

Gary Schiff announces the Taos Tree To D C has died after a long life as the nation’s Christmas tree. Transported from El Rito to Washington in 1991 the 60-foot blue spruce thrived years at the Arboretum before succumbing to a dry summer and hard winter officials say. Gayle Martinez remembers a wonderful effort and a sad end for a beloved symbol.

New Mexicans rally behind Carson National Forest living tree

Martinez praised broad support as about 12,000 ornaments were crafted and displayed. Festivities in Washington included a Chefs of Taos sponsored reception and CNN coverage showing the Frank Marcus Taos Pueblo family dancing with the New Mexico delegation and former Speaker Thomas Foley. Schiff noted the living tree concept spurred local tree planting statewide despite the tree's death.
