Maxie Anderson Leads New Mexico Balloon Pioneers Cross Atlantic

Maxie Anderson, Ben Abruzzo and Larry Newman, a New Mexico trio backed by a $40 million enterprise, crossed the Atlantic in a helium balloon after a failed 1977 attempt. They endured ice, rain, hypothermia, and frostbite during the first run, then improved gear and tactics for a 137 hour, 3120 mile voyage from Massachusetts to France, earning world distance and duration records and a triumphant homecoming from Paris to Albuquerque.
