Defense lawyers in the Steven Zough stabbing case urge the Eighth Judicial District court to drop first degree murder charges from a Taos grand jury against Richard Padilla Viento Herrera and Frederick Gaitan. Andres Vargas asks for a separate trial for Herrera if indictments stand. Judge Peggy Nelson set a Feb 9 deadline for briefs and grand jury tapes before ruling.
Pilot Wes Dye of Niwot Colorado and five passengers were unharmed when a Piper Lance listing gear failed to deploy during a landing at Taos Municipal Airport on Sunday. Dye said he corrected but could not, leaving the right gear problem as the cause. Uninjured: Dye Tom Keenan Cecelia Keenan Susan Raikes.
Taos resident Tom Archuleta pled guilty to vehicular homicide and aggravated DUI after a October 1996 crash that killed his friend Reuben Trujillo. He apologized in court as Judge Peggy Nelson imposed a seven year term, with district attorney John Day seeking a longer 10 year sentence.
Holy Cross Hospital hosts a blood drive on Saturday from 11 am to 6 pm in memory of Theresa Killinger who died in a skiing accident on Jan 9. The drive aims to boost supplies as communities from Espa sfia, Albuquerque and Santa Fe donate. Max Killinger hopes the event underscores the life saving value of blood donations.
Taos moves toward a solid consensus for 2020 guiding land use social cultural economic and environmental policy decisions. Since 1986 Taos expanded planning with regional plans and studies including Traffic Master Plan Water Facilities report Housing Market Analysis 1990 2000 Drainage Study Wastewater Master Plan and Traffic Network Improvement Study. A 1995 contract with Antonio Delgado updated the master plan phase one released January 1996 emphasized community involvement and resources with surveys and focus groups.
