New Day Buffalo Presented to Taos Pueblo for New Era

A yearling buffalo named New Day was given to the Taos Pueblo by New Mexico officials on January 20. Dr. Shirley Hill Witt said the calf represents a new era of understanding between the state government and indigenous peoples. The gift supplements Taos herd of about 40 bison used in religious rites. War Chief Jerry Lujan and tribal leaders attended a luncheon after the acceptance ceremony as New Day trotted past a bale of alfalfa.

Serna Land Grant Trial Details Testimony and Claims

Eugene Weisfeld and other attorneys presented witnesses on both sides in the Serna land grant case. Board members testified the grant allows shared rights to wood, sand, and tierra blanca across the property, with contracts and leases reviewed for legality. Critics argue several leases lacked required county and district court approvals under 1907 New Mexico law, while supporters cite long use and board duties.
