Carl R. Parish 31 of Hanover Ind was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and carrying a concealed weapon in the July 15 shooting death of 17 year old Paul Vigil of Ranchos de Taos near Arroyo Seco. The Taos jury deliberated about three and a half hours before returning the verdict. Parish faces up to nearly five years in prison. The defense plans a motion for a new trial and possible appeal to the New Mexico Court of Appeals, arguing misinstruction on self defense. No racial motive found by the judge or jury. foreman said no evidence of bias.
Larry and Gloria Sanchez, longtime Questa residents, face economic blow from Molycorp mine closure. Larry's 10 years with Molycorp and Gloria's 14 years ended in 1986. they relocated to Parachute and then returned in 1989, now considering long separations as work may take Larry to Arizona. They urge resilience and plan family weddings.
Molycorp plans to end operations this Friday January 24 as about 200 miners will lose their jobs and Taos County will lose around 1 million in tax revenue. The mine opened in 1923 and has operated continuously except for a 1986 shutdown, resuming in 1989 due to market prices. Current molybdenum price at 2.15 per pound follows a decline from 3.60.
