Taos bypass gains from last hour push in 1986 session

In the final hours before the 1986 New Mexico Legislature opened, Rep. Richard LeDoux and Sen. Carlos Cisneros pressed Gov. Toney Anaya to include the Taos bypass in his revenue request. Anaya agreed after discussions, noting Highway Engineer Larry Larranaga’s view that construction could wait until 1987 with potential bond funding. The governor outlined a $225 million executive budget with a 12 percent raise for state workers, while the Legislative Finance Committee proposed broad cuts and salary adjustments.

Tide of brotherhood greets Demo year turnout in Taos county

Taos County Democrats opened the election year with a fund raiser at Hacienda Inn on Saturday January 18 drawing 16 statewide candidates including James B. Lewis Clara Jones and U S congressman Bill Richardson. Gov Toney Anaya praised unity while local hopefuls announced bids for mayor county offices and state posts. The crowd mingled as candidates spoke and mingled signatures and endorsements were gathered.

Meter plant eyes Questa

A Taos County native proposes Selphcom a multi million dollar electronic meter manufacturing plant in Questa. Marvin Selph 33 inventor of Selphcom claims the solid state system will monitor electric gas and water use and send data to utilities by telephone. The project seeks 1.5 million in federal startup funds with an industrial park north of town and a building of 20 000 square feet. Initial employment 40 rising to 800 with weekly output 6 000 units. The goal is to start as early as June and create a model city with utility partners.

Ranchitos Residents Oppose Traffic Relief Routes

Ranchitos area residents unite to oppose proposed traffic relief routes prompting a county hearing plan before Feb. 15. At a Jan. 20 meeting they delivered two petitions and demanded an emergency hearing, with 300 signatures from ditch associations and landowners.
