Caroline M. Peltinato presents a Spanish letter translated for Taos News readers dated November 28, 1963 arguing against Questa's incorporation. The writer laments loss of rural character, warns of “Operation Bulldozer,” and notes mine prosperity does not justify changing the town's spirit.
Sixteen Taos girls met January 14 at Mrs. Er nest Weir's home to elect 1964 club officers and choose projects for the Village 4-H club. Officers include Frances Weir president and Rebecca Ortega vice president. Projects selected cover Home Living Teen Living Home Improvement Canning Freezing Home Garden Electric Leathercraft and Junior Leathercraft plus Junior Leadership. Members range from one to six years in 4-H. The group meets twice monthly for business and project work. Mrs. Weir has five years as leader.
A Taos writer describes a hunters muff to warm hands during winter outings. He explains wearing multiple light wool shirts for insulation, using knitted cotton gloves under loose mittens, and keeping a lighter fluid hand warmer inside a hand knitted muff with an elastic belt. He notes local Jehovah's Witness assembly in Taos and recalls frost bite lessons from a companion.
The Taos County 4 H club council hosted the annual awards banquet at Central Catholic lunchroom on Monday. Gil Gilbert Archuleta presided, with Laura Lopez delivering the pledge and Leo Marquez reciting the 4 H pledge. Ernesty Weir spoke, songs led by Lilliat and others, and guests introduced by Lillian Martinez. County winners in many categories were announced, with Dorman Brookey of New Mexico State University delivering the keynote address.
Atencio of the New Mexico Mental Health Division spoke to Penasco High PTA about mental health and school screening for early grades. The Penasco Girl Scouts held an Investiture Ceremony with pins for Juniors and Cadets, led by Miss Hurley Crews and Noonan, with refreshments served. Panthers traveled to Taos to face Central Falcons, losing 40 to 35, Mercy Torres scoring 15 for Penasco.
Mrs. Julianita M. Coca, resident of Guadalupita New Mexico, died in Pueblo Colorado on January 20 while visiting her daughter. She was mother to Canon residents Melcia des Coca and Eleuterio Coca. Services planned for 4 p.m. tomorrow in Guadalupita.
Taos High School debaters Joe Stuart and Nick Needing earned second place in novice debate at the second annual Aggie Forensic Festival hosted by New Mexico State University. Among 61 novice teams from 28 schools, Taos students defeated Las Cruces and Albuquerque teams before losing to Highland of El Paso in the final. Next Taos trip is Albuquerque tournament Feb 2 22.
Mrs Adelina Garcia recalls a Spanish editor Felix Valdes reviving a message from Taos News readers in Teas City. She mentions purchasing the paper after reading about education for youth and the need for students to prepare for the future. The note cites a Lincoln quote about readiness and education.
