Ernie Blake founder of Taos Ski Valley dies at about 2 p.m. in Albuquerque on January 14. He was 75. A memorial is set for January 21 at Taos Ski Valley with a 12 30 p.m. service. Lifts close early and a jets flyover will scatter his ashes over the ski area he built starting in 1954. Blake, born Ernst Bloch in 1913 in Frankfurt, transformed Taos into a world renowned ski destination, shaping the local economy and industry with a lifelong promotion of quality skiing and hospitality.

Cisneros introduces raise for teachers
SANTA FE A bill to give the state's public school employees an immediate 2 percent salary increase was the first bill introduced to the New Mexico Senate here Tuesday Jan. 17. Its primary sponsor is Taos Sen. Carlos Cisneros. SB 1 would appropriate 13.27 million to give every public school employee a 2 percent raise upon the governor's signature. Cisneros, chairman of the Senate Education Committee, said the plans are to form an aggressive education package beginning with SB 1. Taos Rep. Fred Peralta aims to boost economic development. he expects funding but via a different route from Gov. Garvey Carruthers' request. Carruthers emphasized gains in economic development in his State of the State, seeking more money for the Economic Development and Tourism Department, with Peralta predicting higher appropriations for cooperative marketing and tourism promotion. Peralta will be vice-chairman of the House Transportation Committee and a member of the Taxation and Revenue Committee.
