Taos County legislators forecast Gov. Anaya will push a 173 million tax package to fund schools. Anaya urged raising gross receipts and compensating taxes to improve education while closing loopholes. He backs rebates for the poor and elderly and considers new industries and out of state banks, plus venture capital from severance tax funds.
Sen Francisco Gonzales sits on the Senate floor as bills are signed for introduction in the 80 day session. Rep Richard LeDoux stands with his parents awaiting Gov. Toney Anaya to deliver the State of the State. LeDoux and Gonzales seek funding to improve local roads including SR 64 over Palo.
Taos celebrates its golden year with a no-host party at the Holiday Inn on Tuesday January 24 at 5 30 PM. The event also marks the 60th anniversary of the Taos Volunteer Fire Department and Kit Carson State Park and kicks off a year of monthly events led by the State Parks Commission Kit Carson Foundation Chamber of Commerce and fire department. Plans include a July celebration a park picnic and a golden Easter egg contest awarding a 10 speed bike.
Taos Fire Chief Ed Nettleton vows to enforce the 37 fire code violations at Taos Plaza and Taos Cinema, extending a deadline of January 21 for compliance. The owner, Leo Gallegos, faces delays in expanding Taos Plaza’s sprinkler system and reactivating theater sprinklers, while exits and emergency lighting are being addressed after initial violations on October 11. Fire officials warn closures if dangerous exits remain and stress landlord disputes are not their concern.
Floyd Gonzales and David Borough, both of Taos, faced arraignment on counts of commercial burglary, larceny, conspiracy and criminal damage to public property for Monday night burglaries at Taos Plaza Theater and Farr's Super Market. Investigators say they gained access by breaking a back window at the Plaza Theater and stole over $100 in cash, then breached Farr's Super Market front doors and were found with liquor and meats.
Taos officials plan a 1.1 million UDAG grant to secure water from the San Juan Chama Diversion Project for town growth. Town manager Carlong Miranda says a federal consultant helps revise the application, with revisions done in 30 days and the grant ready for review within two months. Engineers will pump water from the Rio Pueblo near the Rio Grande into Taos.
The Taos Limited Purpose Agency was awarded a $45,000 Community Services Block Grant to aid low income residents of Taos County. Secretary Joseph Goldberg of New Mexico Human Services announced the grant last week. Funds will support income tax help, food distribution, consumer education, financial counseling and emergency assistance before Sept 30. Residents needing help may contact the Taos agency at 768-4227 or the state toll-free line 1-800-482-6217.
A weather update reports frigid conditions through the weekend with subzero readings across Lower Ranchitos Canon and Taos. The National Weather Service expects temperatures to stay below seasonal averages, with lows near zero and highs in the 20s. Last week Taos saw 46 degree highs on Jan 10 and heavy snowfall with nine inches in the valley and 25 at Taos Ski Valley.
Denver federal bankruptcy court rules to liquidate First Territorial Mortgage of Taos and three related companies owned by Jay Schlaks along with assets in Las Colonias and Upper Red River Canyon. New Mexico and Colorado officials join probe into Schlaks operations. trustee John Gaudio to oversee liquidation and activity of related land holdings along the Pecos River.
