A Taos year in review highlights both tragedy and progress. The Co op’s finances improve while crimes and incidents punctuate spring and summer. Key events include leadership changes at J C Penney, legal cases, school graduations, new ventures, and plans for urban projects.
Taos Tigers pushed top rival Tucumcari to the limit in a 1946 Friday night contest at Taos. After trailing by two at halftime, Taos surged ahead in the third before Tucumcari capitalized on 9 of 14 field goals and 4 missed Taos free throws to pull out a 1946 victory. Frank Parraz led Taos with 20 points, followed by Hart of Tucumcari with 7 field goals. Taos heads to the Rio Grande Tournament in Espanola this weekend, facing El Rito and other area teams.
PTA members discussed fostering reading at home to boost early literacy and citizenship among youths. Principal Maes noted improved student participation. a lunchroom rail replacement and steel chair cuts were added to fit small children. Future programs include a February leather quiz, March legislation review, and April system evaluation.
Central Catholic overwhelmed Castilla Lions 82 to 22 on Saturday night. Tony Trujillo led with 28 points, Facundo Trudition added 20, as Central Catholic built a 29-10 halftime lead and cruised through the final two quarters. The Falcons improved to 5-0 at home and face Ojo Caliente and Mora this week.
The Taos community notes the School Board Valdez as subway manager for two years and with Hien for ten years, current vice president of the Taos Rotary Club. A U7 graduate of Taos High School, he served in the army from 1949 to 1952 and was in the National Guard for ten years, rising from private to first lieutenant. Married to Anca Rael of Questa, they have three children.
Taos residents fear a new liquor outlet would degrade the street character and invite public nuisance as derelicts and solicitors increase. Churches near the planned site oppose the transfer proposed by George Said, ranchos trader, who seeks to build on Saki Karavas’s lot after state approval. Approval requires village consent and posted notice before transfer.
More than 130 people attended a recent chamber banquet causing spillover as preparations at the Kachina held about 160 seats but over 230 were served in shifts. Additional guests went to La Cocina and Casa Cordova with others possibly dining elsewhere. President Merle Packard and manager Jay Nichols commented on the unexpected turnout and noted about 100 tickets were sold the night of the event.
Fifty nine members of the Kansas City Ski Club visited Taos Ski Valley for a week of skiing. They arrived by rain in Raton and were transported to Hondo Lodge by bus. The Friday night program featured Taos Indians dance performances and a ski style show directed by Mrs. A. M Rosen.
In a show of school pride Taos Tish School receives a large American flag sent by Leroy Lewman and others honoring students for six weeks of strong curriculum interest. The flag will be placed over the Senate building with formal ceremonies planned soon as principal Liam Parr notes the honor roll commendation for ten students.
