Local opponents vow to block waste transport on county roads as near 200 residents packed Coronado Center. A second meeting is planned to organize the movement, while the Legislature opens amid focus on the Waste Isolation Pilot Project near Carlsbad and a proposed Cimarron site that was dropped.
The Taos committee urged residents to press local, state, and federal representatives to oppose the Waste Isolation Pilot Project known as WIPP. An ad hoc group led by Michael Kitts Barry Keaveny and Rick Klein organized opposition and Kitts planned an appeal to the Commission soon. California and Michigan have enacted laws blocking nuclear plant construction until disposal plans exist.
Gibson's will reopen its Taos location in the Rancho Park Mall on South Santa Fe. Owner Alex Saied of Childress Texas says the store should open in late March or April under a local manager. Workers will be hired via the New Mexico State Employment Service. Major merchandise will carry the Gibson's name, with some departments leased to independents.
