Taos total phones reach 2,575 in 1963 with an increase of 286 connections. Taos office added 207 new lines as Pilar to Tres Piedras area expands. Bill Vickers notes a new Questa post to handle rising business from the Moly Mine expansion. также
Roy Martinez resigned as director of the Taos Valley Boys Club citing ongoing disagreements with some board members over his role as coach and sponsor of the Taos Boxing Club. Tom Martinez was named acting director. The board will seek a permanent replacement, hours shift to 5 to 8 p.m., and the basement will no longer be used due to fire risk and supervision concerns. Martinez said there are no hard feelings.
Luis Martinez of Taos says he is seriously considering a run for the Democrat nomination for county commissioner. His potential foe is J. B. Martinez, who recently hinted interest in the vacancy created by two-term J. J. Montoya.
A professional wrestler, Albert Henry Rosburg, 49, was charged with sexual assault by District Attorney George Reynolds after alleged indecent handling of a 3 year old Taos girl. Rosburg failed to post $7,000 bail, denied guilt, and a preliminary hearing was held. The incident followed a separate incident of a man exposing himself to two girls on Placitas Road earlier in the week.
The annual 4-H awards banquet will begin at 6 30 p.m. January 20 at Central Catholic lunchroom. County nine 4-H clubs members and leaders will receive prizes after dinner. Guest speaker is Dorman Brookey state 4-H leader from New Mexico State University.
Taos school district board awarded superintendent Joe L. Otero a two year contract, aligning with state Supreme Court guidance on administrator terms. The board also hired Quinn and Co. to manage a bond issue around 80,000 dollars and approved a 1,300 dollar package for prospectus and distribution. Kathleen Wintterle resigns as temporary elementary teacher. Ernest David Gutierrez to replace.
J. D. and J. M. Archuleta take over La Fonda liquor store operations and also run the El Gaucho bar, succeeding former lessee Jesse Vigil. The move aligns the Archuletas with the local hospitality businesses and consolidates ownership in the area.
Construction and testing of a pilot plant above Questa at the uranium or bdenum mine show employment rising from about 60 to 70 workers to support operations. The mill site near a red slag heap will handle over 100 tons daily, with financing for an economic deposit seen as the next step. A hauling contract went to Marcelino Marti to move ore to the sampling plant, boosting area employment and housing demand while Questatown pursues incorporation and local tax preparation ahead of a village election.
Taos Housing Authority secured an option on four acres owned by Gilbert Vargas and Phil Lavadie for 20 500 after negotiations with the Fort Worth office of the housing and home administration. The site near Plaza Super Market will fund almost 500 000 in federal loans with rents repaying the cost over years. Occupants will be chosen by need as the project moves to spring bids.
Taos High students aided by Peace Corps trainees launch a drive to collect clean usable linen and bedding for needy families. Donors may bring items to the First Presbyterian church on January 23 24 and 25 or call 2862 or 2742 for pickup. Richard Gonzales of Penasco, ex Republican county chair and current school board member, floated a possible bid for District 3 county commissioner. He said he had not decided but many people urged him to run, facing incumbent Democrat Paul Casias of Ranchos. Gonzales previously lost the 1953 race to Julio Rodarte by 14 votes.
Local restaurants will again host the March of Dimes coffee day next Wednesday with proceeds benefiting the MOD chapter here.
A Taos spokesman said Dr Alfred Price of St Stephens church Philadelphia will hold healing services at St Johns Episcopal Cathedral Albuquerque. Sessions start 10 a.m. January 30 and 31 and 7 30 p.m. January 29 and 30. Price is warden of the Fellowship of St Luke and conducts weekly healing services with a prayer group praying around the clock for the sick.
Taos faces withdrawal of a $90,000 FAA airport grant if local funds of $70,000 are not raised by May 15. An Airport Authority will be named soon to advance planning, with interest from three bonding firms and Frontier Airlines. Several officials and volunteers praised for past work, while Sally Howell resigned from the committee.
Taos representatives depart for Albuquerque to box regional bouts in the state Golden Gloves. Favorites include Ben Salazar 18 and Dippy Medina 16 Taos High students with prior regional and state success. Also competing are Manuel Sandoval Michael McCabe Gilbert Tollardo and Eli Salazar guided by coach Roy Martinez.
Edwardo A. Visarriagas Jr. of Taos has been named revenue examiner for a district covering five northern counties. He will audit businesses for proper state three cent school tax reporting. Son of Edwardo Vilarriagas Sr. of El Prado, he completed a 10 month training course at Santa Fe bureau of revenue before appointment. He invites people with tax questions to call to avoid errors.
Stephen A. Mitchell of Taos attended a Washington gathering of four ex Democratic chairmen on January 1. They were guests at the White House with President Johnson speaking to the group. The committee members also visited President Kennedy’s grave during the trip.
John Brenner of First State Bank was elected president of the Taos Chamber of Commerce with Bob Teck and Joe Rodriguez as officers. Five new directors were named by ballot: Don Biston Bachtel Loren Sloniger Harbert and Bill Blakey.
Authorities have dismissed charges in a bar incident after two men, T Alberto Roybal and Manuel riguez, were involved in a drive that led to a fatal fall down a ravine. State patrol and the district attorney said evidence pointed to simple negligence rather than criminal negligence.
The annual Boy Scout meet is scheduled for February at Central Catholic. Scout Banggu will lead the events, with details on participation and timings to follow in official notices.
