High in Taos 52 degrees on Monday with lows near minus 7 earlier in the week. Snow Carnival brings sun and snow as Red River, Angel Fire, Taos venues report varied snowfall and open lifts throughout the week.
Taos resident Garrett Gravelle aged 20 died Thursday while skiing outside Telluride Winter Sports Area in Prospect Basin. He was among four friends at 11 000 to 12 000 feet when an avalanche struck. His party found him after about 20 minutes, performed CPR until helicopter arrival, but he died at Telluride Clinic. The group had hiked beyond the regular ski area and lacked radio locators. The area had two feet of new snow. Gravelle is survived by Pat Fernandez of Taos.
Former state Senator Francisco Gonzales credits faith and prayer after the New Mexico Supreme Court on Friday refused to reconsider a Court of Appeals decision granting him a new trial on a rape charge from 1985. The ruling means the district attorney must decide whether to retry him.
Dwayne Stepped, former fire chief, nearly burned when gas fumes ignited at a Phillips 66 on Paseo Sur. Andy Alaniz, a bystander, used a fire extinguisher to douse flames on Stepped and his motor home, likely saving his life. He remains hospitalized at UNM Hospital with second degree burns over about 10 percent of his body.
Gilbert Vigil has been appointed captain with the Taos County Sheriff's Department under Sheriff Valerio. The new position replaces two sergeant posts and assigns Vigil to act as sheriff in Valerio's absence. Sgt Nick Jaramillo was laid off after Valerio took office on January 1 and again January 6 upon return from leave. Valerio exempted sergeants from personnel rules. A deputy will be hired to patrol northern areas Castilla and Amalia, with applications open.
The Taos Federation of United School Employees endorsed Ignacio Peralta for the four year school board seat and Marc Trujillo for the two year post. Peralta won 85 percent of TFUSE votes and Trujillo 73 percent from ballots cast by five percent of union members on January 5 and 6.
David Jordan, 52, a ski instructor at Taos Ski Valley for eight years, collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack on January 6 while helping a group off chair 5. No autopsy was performed. His cremated ashes were scattered on Taos Mountain at an 8 am ceremony on Sunday January 11, attended by friends, fellow instructors, and family.
