CAP Funding Hangs On Taos Bi County Board Fight

In Taos and Rio Arriba, the Bi County Community Action Program faces a 1971 funding cut of about 1.5 million dollars as leadership turmoil continues. The board’s executive director contemplates a Washington trip amid resignations and difficulty contacting key figures. The State Planning Office backs limited funding through March while praising board priorities. Moodays are bad enough.

Taos County approves new police cars and reforms

Taos County Commission approved three 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle police cars with radios, funded 40 percent locally and 60 percent by LEAA. Newly elected Sheriff Eddie Montoya called the purchase vital, while the panel also eyed a merit system, deputy training, and civil defense manager. Additional plans include fire engine purchase, road maintenance funding, and more voting machines, amid tight finances and possible gas tax action.

Red River votes for incorporation under dispute

New Mexico Attorney General to review an appeal from Red River residents after a 2 to 1 incorporation vote. Critics claim nearly one third of eligible voters were excluded and sections of town were treated arbitrarily. Taos County to canvass results, set dates for a town council and mayor election. 57 yes, 28 no, 9 challenged out of 109 expected voters. Friday’s result follows a narrow 1967 defeat by one vote. A community meeting preceded the election.
