State studies new relief route and one way streets plan
The State Highway Department proposes the ABC relief route to cut travel length and cost, possibly displacing two houses, and to make Paseo del Pueblo one way northbound from Placitas to north of Kachina Lodge with Placitas southbound. The project includes widening SR 3 to 80 feet with curb and gutter, and would intersect SR 8 and SR 3 near Centinel Bank and El Charro Cafe.

New Year DWI Arrests Fall in Taos County
DWI arrests for New Year s Eve dropped by more than 50 per cent from last year. Bars served alcohol with many patrons choosing light consumption or none at all while some opted for soda or coffee. State Police logged nine DWI arrests versus 20 last year, town police one versus four, and county deputies none versus one. Final Taos County total was 10 compared with 26 the prior year.

Canon house to be sold after July 4 1980 fatal shooting
The house that witnessed the July 4 1980 fatal shooting of 15 year old Thomas Wagner will be sold at public auction next month. Martindale has debts to New Mexico Federal Savings and Loan and Panhandle Western Production Credit. A Raton jury acquitted Jimmy Don Martindale of manslaughter. Wagner is son of Taos artist Jim Wagner and Bertha Quintana. Sale set for February 3 on courthouse steps. Debts include 83028.07 to New Mexico Federal and 54607.27 to Bank of the Panhandle plus fees to Rodey Dickason Sloan Akin Robb and the Bank of Santa Fe. Rodey firm attorney Charlie Daniels represented Martindale.
