Seaman First Class L. Long of Pot Creek Route completes a six month East cruise aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock based out of Alameda California. He visited the Philippines Japan Hong Kong and Hawaii and participated in fleet maneuvers off South Vietnam and the China Sea during the conflict.

State officials and Molybdenum Corp of America executives say Questa has begun incorporation steps as part of growth plans in northern Taos County. A feasibility study on new facilities for employees is under way, with a site consultant to report soon.

Youngsters Earn Passes At Taos Ski Valley

The Taos Ski Valley junior work program concluded with several earning full season tickets. A larger group earned partial credit for season passes. The junior racing team, having trained over the holidays, expects enough snow for a Jan. 12 race and notes fewer Albuquerque and Los Alamos racers will have trained due to snow shortages.

The Boys' Club of Taos Valley board will meet Thursday January 9 in place of Wednesday. Three Torrance County towns win 363000 gas line grant

Istancia, Willard, and Moriarty in Torrance County were approved for 363000 in federal matching funds for a natural gas line construction project. U S Senator Clinton P Anderson announced the grant in a telegram to Governor Campbell. The towns formed a corporation to issue bonds for the remaining project cost of 26000.

Now's The Time For Exemptions for Veterans

County assessor Phil Lavadie urged veterans to bring their certificate of eligibility to his office before March to obtain the 2000 exemption from valuation of personal property and real estate. Certificates can be obtained from the Veterans Service Commission in Santa Fe with an honorable discharge. If the head of household is out of state, a spouse may bring the certificate to the assessor's office to obtain the exemption.

Births and deaths rise in Taos County in 1963 data

New Mexico Public Health figures show Taos County births up in November from 127 to 40 in 1963. The year to date total births increased from 446 to 471, a rise of 25 over 1962.

Arson Suspected After Barn Fire In Penasco

State police held a Taos area flat this week for arson inquiry connected to a New Year’s Eve blaze in Penasco that caused about $5,000 in damage. Taos Fire Department responded to a late New Year’s Day call from Penasco residents as a barn owned by Elida Lujan burned, destroying the structure and its hay and badly damaging several nearby cars.

Traffic Jam on Pilar Hill Caused by Snow

State police from Taos aided Sunday in clearing a snow caused traffic jam on Highway 64 Pilar Hill and the horseshoe bend. Ray Daves and Tom Holder described a nearly daylong effort to move about 300 cars without chains or snow tires. One accident occurred with no injuries. wreckers aided the climb and gravel was spread to improve traction.

The Ranchos de Taos advisory committee votes to close the Boys' Club until March and possibly April. Operations will resume as soon as the community can support the program.
