Penasco residents vote down forming a new municipality with 135 against and 49 in favor on Election Day. 25 early and absentee ballots were all for incorporation. Provisional ballots will be reviewed Friday to finalize the Taos County canvass.
The Taos News will host its second Legislative Forum on Saturday January 9 from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Kit Carson Board Room. State Rep. Roberto Gonzales and Sen. Carlos Cisneros will answer questions and hear concerns. Admission is free and all residents are invited.

A rifle belonging to a county sheriff deputy was reported stolen from a departmental unit. Investigators are reviewing security logs and calling witnesses to determine where the weapon disappeared on duty.

In a unanimous ruling the New Mexico Supreme Court ordered all records of more than 30 Taos Pueblo members arrested after a courtroom outburst to be vacated and expunged in the contempt matter. The court will also issue an opinion on Judge Sam Sanchezs handling of the arrests following the hearing in Santa Fe. Darryl Bouchard, Taos public defender, noted vacating the records treats the incident as if it never happened and Sanchez reportedly apologized for his heat of the moment actions.
After a decade of meetings and studies the EPA releases a 120 page plan to remediate soils and waters at the Questa molybdenum mine and mill. The proposal, potentially costing Cheviot Mining nearly 1 billion dollars and taking up to 30 years, includes soil removal, a water treatment plant, tailings cover, rock regrading and revegetation with native plants. A 60 day public comment period began January 6 with access at the Questa Village Hall online.
Taos police Sgt David Trujillo and Officer Virgil Vigil saved an unconscious man from a burning white Lincoln Town Car stuck in dirt near Herdner Road shortly after midnight on December 31. Police Chief Rick Anglada praised their quick actions and noted firefighters would have faced a dead body otherwise.
Taos voters will choose mayor and two council seats with two incumbents facing challengers. In Taos Ski Valley the mayor and two councilors run unopposed. Questa offers five mayoral candidates. Filing closed Jan. 5. elections March 2.
