A pitbull that killed two pregnant ewes and wounded two others was shot by a Pilar farmer after a Monday morning attack near the old schoolhouse. The owner said he will reimburse the livestock owners. the dog weighed about 70 pounds and required multiple shots to stop.
Red River residents consider withholding property tax payments in Taos County amid claims of inflated 1988 appraisals based on 1986 market values. Mayor Harold Young notes growing unrest and a planned public meeting to decide a united course, while County re evaluation director Gerald Nichols warns of penalties for nonpayment and outlines protest procedures within 30 days of notice.
Taos County announces five new employees to start the New Year as acting county manager James Duran may become permanent. New hires include Connie Vigil Henderson as administrative assistant, Mike Montoya as purchasing agent, Joe Mike Duran as superintendent of roads, Albert Medina as road foreman Central District 1, Paul Archuleta as road foreman Northern District 2, and Juan Archuleta as road foreman Southern District 3. Lou Gallegos, state secretary of Human Services in New Mexico, resigns to join Manual Lujan in Washington D C as personal staff. Lujan named Secretary of the Interior by President elect George Bush. Gov. Garvey Carruthers accepts the resignation and appoints Alex Valdez as the new HSD secretary.
Police records show about $665 taken from a safe at Holy Cross Hospital on December 19. Only about $100 in cash remained. the rest was in credit card receipts. Nora Garcia reported the night deposits were not in the emergency room safe, which had a top opening for deposits. Garcia noted the envelope with night deposits protruding on several occasions.
Red River resident John Fletcher remains in serious condition at UNM Hospital after a 45 foot embankment plunge on Malette Road outside Red River Tuesday night. He suffered severe head injuries a fractured shoulder and internal injuries after losing control on a fast Yamaha snowmobile at about 10 p.m. Police said rocks were hit and it is unclear if a tree was struck.
Administrator Leigh Cox said Holy Cross Hospital was able to meet its Friday payroll on Dec 30 but added it was close. He warned the facility expects continued fiscal difficulties through the winter months.
Taos Ski Valley drew an estimated 4,600 skiers on Thursday despite a higher 8 percent December business. Forest Service and valley officials say peak occupancy stayed within permit limits, while traffic snaked from Safeway to Pueblo Cafe and local lodgings ran full with no vacancy signs.
The town opened an official size hockey rink with ice, available daily 4 to 8 pm. Skates rent for 50 cents. Charlie Raskovics and 20 volunteers led the effort. Mayor Santistevan praised the volunteers as "Charlie's angels." The rink cost $8,000, delayed by weather, and Robin Tropper will teach skating to youth, teens, and adults.
