Molycorp Hikes Product Output at Questa mine and mill

Molycorp of America Questa reports higher molybdenum concentrate output and maintains 315 employees with a 2.6 million dollar payroll. The firm projects increased state and federal tax revenue, including 446,000 to New Mexico and 330,000 to the federal government this year, with 85,000 in natural resources taxes and 180,000 in school and compensating taxes in 1965 rising this year.

Land Appraisal Map Extended in Taos County

Draftsmen for J L Jacobs and Co contracted to conduct county land appraisal. Mapping will cover Ranchos de Taos and Llana Quemada with El Prado Taos and Canon to follow. Field workers to begin training in about two weeks and canvass the county late January or early February. Three Taos High School boys Aldo Chavez Don J Espinosa and Albert Garcia employed as draftsmen. two studying drafting in school. Field workers must pass a general test including mathematics grammar and understanding. numerous applications on file.

Taos Condemnation Suit Hearing January 10

The Taos Municipal Airporters Insurance Co lists a condemnation dispute with Town of Taos and Dr. Harry McCarthy et al in District Court. Proceedings begin January 10 with a 1:30 p.m. session. landowners settled for Town’s airport land northwest of Taos. other cases on January 12 include estate damages and Frank Arrijo v. Martinez.

Ski resorts report solid snow and open slopes this weekend

Snow depths vary with 28 inches on top and 22 mid-mountain. All lifts operate and slopes are open with excellent conditions. TSV lists a 48 inch base with mixed conditions and new snow. Angel Fire shows eight to 14 inch base in back bowl with two inches new. Roads clear and weather fine. Lift five ski run rated very good while No six rated fairly good.

Taos Pueblo Man Injured In New Year Truck Crash

Jose A. Mirabal of Taos Pueblo remained in Holy Cross Hospital recovering from injuries after his truck collided with a tractor trailer on State Road 3 near Baal's Service Station at 2 18 a m New Year s Day. Investigating officer Teodora Montoya said the semi driver stopped before impact, no citations issued yet pending further investigation.

Commission actions on county land road and rent issues

The commission discussed quieting title on county road portions in a community where a business extends three feet onto the road but does not block public use. A resolution set rent for county clerk office space at $20 monthly charged quarterly. Delinquencies include Mrs. Browning, Juanita Howell for 11 months and Atilano Montoya for six. A Llano petition from 20 students and 16 parents urged graveled road conditions. former commissioner Griego opposed graveling, noting non property use and snow removal. AAG letter advised waiting for the annual board of equalization on Carson Estates assessments. CAP seeks county-wide door to door survey. no action yet on Penasco social problems committee to connect employers and workers.

County plans bond program for a new courthouse site

Commissioners discussed issuing bonds and a county wide program to sell the idea. Voters rejected a courthouse bond proposal in early 1968 after a prolonged dispute over the site. Martinez stated in the old courthouse that the place is disgrace.

Double Burglary Hits Gas Co and Beauty Shop

Police reported a Wednesday night break in at Southern Union Gas Company and Helen's Beauty Shop. Thieves gained access through large rear windows, taking $174 in cash and a set of keys from the gas office while leaving uncashed checks and damaged desks and papers behind. Fingerprints were collected and investigators hope for arrests soon.

Special Class Registration Set for Saturday Sessions

Registration for remedial reading and mathematics for children in Brades ages 3 to 10 will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Taos Junior High School Annex and Taos Elementary School. Music classes registration occurs at the same time in the Music Building. Orlando Ortiz says these classes are open to public and non public school students with homeroom teacher approval and will be taught by regular staff members.

Board Seats Decided Under New Mexico Law

Candidates with the most votes secured the board seats while the new law 73-1041 NM Statutes Annotated 1953 compilation is cited. Neither Vasquez nor Romero indicated plans for re election. Duran stated Walter Brown and Liang were the only applicants named, but he is unsure about Bawa relends 0 Ue.

Church Resumes Normal Schedule After Holidays

The First Presbyterian Church returns to its regular timetable with church school for grades 1-6 each Thursday after school, children’s choir at 4 30 p.m., junior high fellowship Fridays after school, and worship Sundays at 6 30 a.m and 11 a.m with a Monday 7 p.m service for Sunday worshippers. Preschool church school begins at 8 30 a.m on Sunday.
