Taos to test day treatment program for at risk students
Taos educators plan an alternative school for students with serious emotional disturbances. Robert Pasternack of Casa de Corazon and Taos Schools superintendent Andy Gallegos agreed to pilot a program starting with 16 sixth to eighth graders. Classes run 8:30 to 4:30 five days weekly at an undisclosed community site away from Taos Junior High.

Taos County approves sign ordinance with billboard limits
Taos County commissioners adopted a countywide sign ordinance on February 27. The plan allows existing off premise signs to stay if kept in good repair and ownership remains with the original landowner or descendant, with sign standards set to be met within five years including a 96 square foot limit and a maximum of four colors.

Community mourns loss of Taos County horse lover Joe Montoya
Joe Montoya 36, lifelong Taos County resident and horse enthusiast, died Feb. 19 in an auto accident. His funeral Feb. 22 drew 1000 plus mourners, with a horse drawn carriage and riders in procession to Dolores Cemetery. He owned Taos Tractor Trailer, worked at Taos Ski Valley, and supported 4-H Sky Riders, Taos County Sheriff’s Posse, Kiwanis, Crimestoppers, and Gideons. He is survived by wife Sandy, son Eloy, parents Ernesto and Doris, six sisters and one brother.
