Taos approves 911 center tax in special election
Fewer than 1,000 voters turn out for a Feb 14 election approving a countywide emergency communications gross receipts tax to fund the Taos County 911 dispatch center. Of 682 ballots, 409 supported the tax and 273 opposed. The tax adds about 18 cents per $100 purchased, or 0.1875 percent, with projected annual revenue of $850,000 to $870,000, possibly up to $1 million in strong tourism years. The measure awaits state TRD certification before starting July 1, with distributions beginning mid-September. The dispatch center operates under a JPA involving Taos town and county.
